Invalid Emails in PrestaShop: How to Clean Your Database and Protect Your Deliverability

Your PrestaShop store has been collecting email addresses for months, maybe years. Customer account sign-ups, forms, CSV imports, newsletter subscriptions — every entry is a chance for an incorrect, abandoned or fake address to slip in. And the more your database grows without verification, the more your deliverability quietly deteriorates.

What is an invalid email address?

An invalid email address is an address that cannot receive messages. Even if it looks like a real address, sending fails for several reasons: incorrect syntax, a nonexistent domain, or a mailbox that has been deleted or abandoned.

The most common cases in a PrestaShop database:

  • Typos at sign-up — prenom@gmai.com, contact@domaine,fr
  • Disposable or temporary emails — used to grab a discount voucher or create an account with no commitment
  • Bot-created accounts — fake addresses generated automatically
  • Addresses that have gone inactive — valid at sign-up, but since abandoned or deleted
  • Old unverified CSV imports — files carried over from a previous platform without any quality control

Why it’s a serious problem for your store

Impact on deliverability

Sending to invalid emails increases hard bounces, which mailbox providers interpret as a sign of poor list hygiene. This can damage your sender reputation and lower your inbox placement rate. In the worst cases, poor list hygiene can also lead to aggressive filtering, or even blocking by some providers.

Impact on your metrics

If part of your list consists of invalid or inactive addresses, your open, click and conversion rates are all skewed — which makes segmentation and data-driven decisions harder.

Impact on GDPR compliance

Under the GDPR, keeping addresses that are clearly inaccurate or outdated goes against the data accuracy principle (Article 5) and calls for regular correction, cleanup and deletion mechanisms.

The limits of native PrestaShop email validation

PrestaShop validates the format of an email address, but not whether the mailbox actually exists, nor whether the address is disposable or risky. Without additional verification, invalid emails can therefore enter your database through account sign-ups, forms or CSV imports.

In practice, this means an address like test@domaine-inexistant.com can pass PrestaShop’s native validation without any problem — and end up in your mailing lists.

How to clean your PrestaShop database effectively

1. Bulk-verify your existing addresses

If your database has never been cleaned, start by exporting your contacts to CSV from the PrestaShop back office, then run them through GTMail-Verif. The tool checks each address (syntax, domain, mailbox existence, disposable status) and returns a file with the status of each contact.

2. Check customer, order and newsletter emails

MailHygiene PRO integrates directly into PrestaShop and lets you verify and clean the addresses already in your database — customers, orders, newsletter — with SMTP validation, disposable domain detection and risk scoring. You can also import a CSV/XLSX file to clean a list in bulk.

3. Remove or segment problematic addresses

Hard bounces — permanent failures such as “user unknown” or “domain not found” — must be removed from your list immediately. Continuing to send to hard bounces signals poor list hygiene and directly hurts your deliverability.

4. Send an email after account creation

PrestaShop can automatically send an email after each customer account is created. Combined with an additional check of the email address, this is a useful complementary measure for spotting some incorrect or unreachable addresses earlier.

In short

An unmaintained PrestaShop database degrades over time. Invalid emails, disposable addresses, bot accounts — every problematic address left in your list increases your bounce rate, damages your sender reputation, skews your statistics and complicates your GDPR compliance.

Clean your existing database with GTMail-Verif, and clean and check the emails of your customers, orders and newsletter subscribers with MailHygiene PRO for PrestaShop.
